Development and validation of the motivations to Eat Meat Inventory

Previous research suggests that there are four primary motives to eat meat: it is natural, normal, necessary, or nice. However, these have not yet been distinguished empirically; the lack of a measurement tool can distinguish has contributed literature focuses primarily on meat-eating motivation justification in general, as opposed differences between motives. We developed 19-item measure, Motivations Eat Meat Inventory (MEMI), fit four-factor model three samples (total N = 2175), including one with large number vegetarians. Using this instrument, we generated psychological profiles associated each motive, and showed structure correlates highly similar for omnivores This provides valuable studying variation eating meat among both meat-eaters vegetarians an initial framework understanding underpinnings different motivations.
